Effect of Mushroom Compost
Months ago I asked for views about mushroom compost and its possible good and
dangerous effects on my patch. I did this after, not before (brilliant, eh?)
I had tilled in loads of the stinking stuff. Well...
I got my soil tests back today. Some folks had said to beware of a rise in
salts. No problem according to A and L Agricultural labs. But it did raise
the ph to 7.4. They recommended iron sulfae/sulfide to help fix this.
What was surprising was that the part of the yard I tilled with Green Waste -
the composted yard clippings that the garbage company sells - was up to ph
7.7 whereas it was 7.3 last year.
So, overall it looks like no harm from mushroom compost.
And a friend just called with the offer of as much horse manure as I want,
delivered to my door (well, my yard) for free. Living in the city as I do,
this is small miracle. It seems that some friends of my friend own a stable,
and they have to get rid of lots of dukey before the weather gets hot and the
health department comes around.
My wife is just not seeing this for the blessing it really is. Alas.
