Well the water certainly doesn't get taken up by the leaves, and I don't 
think there would be any actual benefit of getting leaves wet, mainly 
problems. So of course if you keep the leaves from getting wet, it would 
definitely be better, overall. But remember that all vines in good soil have 
taproots coming from them that benefit from water.
