I know that some people claim that it is impossible to tell if a plant
is going to produce a REALLY BIG PUMPKIN, but I'm sure that sometimes a
plant just goes crazy and it becomes pretty obvious early on that it's
going to be great. I'll bet that some of you out there saw (or grew!)
some of the big ones last year (or before) and could tell us how the
plants looked. For example, when I talked with Harley Sproule, he said
that the 690 plant that grew the 968 was a monster--"the vine was as big
around as my arm" or something like that. I know that the best
producing plant I've had (it did MUCH better than any others) looked
MUCH better from day one--huge cotelydons, gigantic leaves on tall
stalks, fast growing, etc. I'd be curious to hear how the plant that
produced the 1190 Checkon (815 Checkon seed) and others that produced
the 1131, 1009.5, 980.5, 1036.5, 991, 975 Gervais, 859, etc. etc. did as
plants. In other words, CAN YOU SOMETIMES TELL IF A PLANT IS GOING TO
PRODUCE A MONSTER? This would be useful information for thinning
plants, I think, especially if you know, for example, that the 690 plant
that produced the 968 was a monster and the one that you're growing just
looks average.
