Re: maple leaves


Oak leaves do lower pH more than maple leaves and they do take longer to
decompose. There was some  discussion about a year ago about maple
leaves containing a growth inhibiting substance that leaches out of the
soil after a few months. If you need to lower your pH then oak leaves
will help more than maple. Mulching the leaves really helps to break
them down and so does frequent tilling which gets more air into the
soil. It is interesting to note that we have never used anything but oak
leaves in Gerry's part of the patch due to higher pH that is caused by 
some crushed limestone that is in the soil. Bottom line, some leaves are
better than others, but oak ain't bad.
