Re: When is the right time
I will leave specific advice for California to the experienced California
growers. If I'm not mistaken, I think Jon Hunt starts seeds quite late...
late May?? And different climates may cause slightly different growth
rates.
Folks like Barbara Kincaid in Florida have to start growing in January or
February to finish before the murderous summer heat begins. But they can't
do the traditional fall weighoffs.
The fact remains that if you are aiming for the late September/early October
weighoffs, you have a window of late April through late May when you need to
start seeds. Even late May in most places is iffy, since two things happen
in September to slow fruit growth. Most places it starts getting cooler in
September, especially at night. And the shortening hours of daylight may
also be a factor.
May 1 is a good generic start date. You can't go too far wrong with that.
