Well, I have a theory on this. Whoever grew this enormous
pumpkin using milk probably had naturally acidic soil. The
milk served to buffer that acidity with its natural
alkalinity, resulting in a good neutral environment for a
giant pumpkin to grow in. This is just a wild theory on my
part. I have no idea of the actual circumstances.
In your case, with probably neutral potting soil and controlled
conditions, your water plant is going to be neutral, the soda
plant will be way acidic and the milk plant way alkaline. The
experiment is still valid! Go with it. You just didn't get the
results you expected, but you probably can go ahead and explain
the results you got. Maybe you could use one of those cheap pH
tester kits to confirm this.
