Back Again
Hello Pumpkin Folk,
I am back on the list after having to change ISP's. Earthlink bought
out the company we were using. Didn't like some of their policies so we
had to hunt donw another company here. We are locked up here in Duke
Center. We have a small phone company between us and the outside world,
that prevents us from using some of the major ISP companies. Long story.
Just wanted to get back in here and say to those that offered us seed.
We will get to you soon with our envelopes.
The book-mobile didn't have the books that some suggested we read. We
did get a copy of one of "Don Langevin's" books. "How to grow World
Class Giant Pumpkins". We found the picture of the pumpkin filled with
water, for added weight, rather comical, but did wonder about what
person would go to such ends to win a weigh off.
We are still having snow here pretty much daily it doesn't amount to
much. Makes us wonder if spring is ever going to show up. This seems
like an very long winter.
The "Red Winged Black Birds" have been around for some weeks now,
Robins showed up a few days later. The Red Wing Balck birds are usually
a good sign. They are interesting to watch as the males make claim to
the best nesting areas. Battles go on for days it eventually calms down.
Then! The girls arrive a few weeks later and it starts all over again.
The days are staying light longer and the temps are gradually going
up. We have seen 40's and a few 50's but night temps still drop into the
teens and twenties. This will be a "normal" year for this part of Pa. We
won't be able to get anything into the ground until mid May. We should
have more than enough time for good gardens and fields.
I hope to meet some of the local growers this year. Andy Wolf lives
in near-by New York and there are other growers here in Pa. that are not
to far away. Would like to meet some of them also.
That's all from Duke Center for now.
Gary...
