re: very new to pumpkins

Pumpkin Girl,
Get a soil test! Most major Universities in each state have an agricultural dept. and soil tests are done. I get mine done at WVU for only the cost of mailing the sample. This test gives soil pH, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, manganese and exactly what you need to do to your soil to make it suitable for pumpkins. I wouldn't recommend any zoo doo that comes from carnivores or meat-eaters ( due to the possibility of parasite contamination from the meat and eventually into the soil where it could be passed on to humans by eating anything in the garden).
Get some good Atlantic Giant seeds, good soil, good sun, and good advice from this list and archives and you can grow a good pumpkin.
Good Luck!
