Doug, I use the labor method, Don't let them overcome your patch get them while they are young and tender.
I go out on in the morning when I know it ain't gonna rain and use the garden rake lightly across the top of the soil and just uproot those little tender weeds and let the sun cook the roots.
Do this weekly and once the vine has covered the area you shouldn't have any problem?
