Hey. I guess we can start the season now. The preliminaries are out of the
way. We've bashed Ray again. When I first started growing pumpkins I needed
some seeds. Being really new to it all and having no "pumpkin group" to get
advice from, I somehow heard about Ray and his seeds. I ordered some. That
year I grew a 622 pound pumpkin. This was from Ray's Seeds. I have always
been grateful for those seeds. Early on there was no real way to get any
meaningful seeds if you were out in the boondocks and didn't know anyone.
Now, with all the huge pumpkins being grown and the fact that there are
usually 600 or so seeds in each of them and everyone being so generous, it is
not that difficult to get some good seeds. The problem now is deciding which
one to plant. If Ray is in the pumpkin business and Howard is in the pumpkin
business why should any of us be beating on either one of them? They both
have their place in the Pumpkin World. Howard brought us the seeds and Ray
brought the idea of having a national and then international contest system.
They will both have a place in the history of pumpkin growing for sure. All
of this and I can't even get through the 800 pound mark. Let the season and
the fun begin. My starting date here in PA will be May 5. Anderson from
California told me that at that time the moon and stars will be properly
aligned. Yes, let the fun begin. Come on you vine borers. Come on you
groundhogs. Come on you fungi. I, for one, hope to be ready.
