Re: Jack-o-lanterns seeds

When it comes to something like Jack-O-Lantern (pepo)
you might be best off by buying a package of seeds for
$1.29, unless you can be sure that the seeds you are
getting from someone are absolutely pure. For example,
last year I got some "New England Sugar" (small pie
pumpkin) seeds from a neighbor. I just wanted a few that
would be good for pies. Well, about half of them came
up as gourds. They must have cross polinated with another
pepo variety in my neighbors garden the year they were
grown.

On the other hand, I'm doing something similar again
this year. I thought to try Howden, for the pumpkins
that we grow for give-aways. We invite a bunch of
friends over in mid-October and give away pumpkins to
all the kids. Anyway, last year around Halloween I
went to Wal-Mart and bought a huge Howden pumpkin for
$1.50 and took at least 200 seeds out of it. I figure
that a commercial farmer is going to have a whole
field of the same variety, so my chances of getting
a proper cross is pretty good.

BTW: Jack-O-Lantern seeds are great for roasting! The
Howdens don't look as good. But I did test germinate the
Howdens and they came up very fast.

Regards, Cliff
