RE: Looking Back

Mike-great list--the 1-20 "facts"------and we're still learning--AE

So what things are different from back then??

I think that the game was different back then. And seeds were not passed
out so freely. Especially to a good competitor. The more seeds you pass out
and get planted the more chances they have at surviving.

Now days there a huge demand on the potentially good seed. Seed is passed
out to masses freely. Growers are poised ready to plant it if it does well.
A good grower has to take the chance and hit in a timely manner.

I was thinking at how many myths there has been since when I started back in
94.

1) the more leaves the bigger the pumpkin.
2) you get a pound per leaf.
3) water the hell out of them
4) need a cool climate
5) big ones only come from Canada
6) pound on the potassium
7) Tan seed is better
8) no white seed is better
9) Orange pumpkins are light
10) white pumpkins are heaviest
11) no salmon color are the heaviest.
12) 1000lbers don't produce good offspring
13) seed under 700lbs is better
14) certain seed does better in certain regions
15) greenies are bad(myth?)
16) flat vine is genetic?
17) Ironite is the secret
18) Have to hit the 10,20,30 bench marks to get a big one.(my myth)
19) selfing is bad
20) 5 lobers are better than 4 lobers

I am sure there are more???

One thing that is different for me since 94 is the list of DO'S has grown
ten fold.......MB
