I have to agree, get a soil test!
I did this winter, and the results were:
pH = 7.8 (ouch!) (so you're not the highest on the list)
low organic content
low nitrogen
good levels of everything else
It is a heavy clay soil. I guess the clay soil
holds onto nutrients, except for nitrogen which
must constantly be replaced.
At least with a soil test, you know what you need
to do.
