There doesn't have to be a flaw to be labeled EXH. Take the 801.4 Ciliberto
2000 EXH, it was EXH because Tony C. had already entered a pumpkin and could
only have one that could win money.

True

In 2000 both the 801.4 Ciliberto and 835.8 Checkon were listed as EXH. here at Altoona, but were both sound pumpkins. In 2001 we followed GPC guidelines more closely and allowed the grower to enter two pumpkins per family for competition. Tony Ciliberto entered the 1061.5 and his son Anthony, who by the way did quite a bit of the pollinating in the Ciliberto patch last season , entered the 923. The second pumpkin is eligible to place but is not awarded prize money for the second fruit. It is passed down one notch.

In actuality, we should have listed the above 2000 pumpkins as official weights here in Altoona, and not EXH. This eliminates any confusion about the soundness of the fruit and also gives the site a boost in their site average since the exhibition fruit are usually looked at as flawed and not included in their site weights.  The latter is not a major issue but I think that eliminating the confusion concerning the soundness of the fruit is important.

best wishes to all this season,
