  Subject: Pumpkin problem

  Chris,

I have a question about a problem I have had with my pumpkins for the past 2
years. I start them indoors every year and dont plant them out untill the are
fairly large. They seem fine at first, probably the first 30 days or so
outside, they grow rapidly and look fine. I have had an issue with lots of
insect, especially cucumber beatles. Last year I got and insectiside and it
seemed to help, I also picked up a fungicide as well. Heres the issue.
Something happens about day 30 and the plants start to day from the stem up.
The leaves first wilt and then turn brown and die. The whole plant eventually
dies killing the pumpking and plant. This process occurs from start to finish
in less then 2 weeks. At first I thought that they might be infected with
somthing from the insects, so I sprayed on the insecticides and fungicides but
this didnt work. I looked for grubs in the soil at the base of the plant but
there was no sign of them there. I analysed the soil and it was farily
normal, but I dont believe they would grow at all if it were that bad. I have
been using a pelatized fertalizer that i put about 4 inches below the plant
when i put them into the ground and then weekly feedings with miracle grow.
the soil has also been enriched with manuare along with lime. I just dont
know where to go from here, Im sick of having the plants grow great and then
die. I never had this problem untill i moved to my new house but the soil
here isnt much different then my old house. Any Ideas?

  thanks for any help

  Nick Pennell
