re: what are the symptoms of root pathogens? Do a lot of us have 'em and not know it?

I'm just wondering--what are the symptoms of root pathogens?  Do a lot
of us have 'em and not know it?  I had some brown, dead looking roots
when I tore up the patch in the fall.  Still don't know if they were
dead pumpkin roots or roots fromt the evil neighbor's poplar trees.  My
pumpkins wouldn't set, either.  That could have been due to excess
nitrogen and heat, though.  Just wondering.
