Some questions

Okay, I'm getting ready to get back into the game....

Wayne Kennedy has kindly sent me some seeds, I have most of my seed starting
equipment gathered, and plans for preparing the garden are falling into
place. But, now, I have a few questions...

Please note that I live in Peterborough (central Ontario).

1. With a final frost date at the end of May, when should I plan on
starting the seeds?

2. What do people do to prevent dampening off?

3. What date should I aim for to put the seedlings in the ground?

4. I am going to be growing off-site... that is, I won't be able to check
in on the seedlings daily. What kind of cold frame can I make (cheaply)
that will keep them warm at night without frying them in the day? Specifics
would be appreciated.

5. I know that the main root can go deep and should be mounded, but how
deep the the vine roots go? I've been told that they're pretty shallow.
Any ideas?

Any help or advice (even contradictory advice if others want to weigh in)
would be appreciated.

Thanks
