Hi ---- I have a question regarding pumpkin stem problems, and I
think I know who you are and are knowledgable about this. Last year I grew
a 628 pounder that was the only pumpkin disqualified because the stem had
completely rotted off, thus leaving a small hole which was the cause of the
disqualification. I know it is a bit early to be thinking about this, but
nevertheless, it has been on my mind for quite some time. How do you
control the inevitable rotting process that I encountered? I tried Captan
many times - - even kept a fan on the pumpkin in the latter stages to keep
it dry, and little by little got rid of each soft area until there was
nothing left. I heard from someone that had I used Aluminum Sulfate on the
affected area, it would have hardened up and stilled the rotting process.
Is this true? I have a seed from a 944 pounder this year with a good
history of genetics, and I don't want the same thing to happen. Thanks
alot, and call me ---- JER.
