Steve,
Too much fresh manure can burn the leaves. If the manure is a year old it
cools off. There is a great temptation to overfertilize, but it stresses the
plant and makes it mature early. Too much fertilizer = smaller pumpkins. Just
a note to the growers in the northern U.S..... it is still way too early to
be starting plants. They will be pot bound, spindley and will not transplant
well when the time comes. Most growers will not be starting seeds inside for
3 or 4 weeks. Do not fertilize young plants in pots....it will burn them and
the leaves will crinkle up. Young plants use the food reserve from the seed.
Get them up quick and outside when a week old, then water them in with some
high phos fertilizer when you transplant.
