I till once in the Spring to loosen the soil, chop up Winter Rye, till in
manure and fertilizer. Then once again in the Fall to chop up garden residue
and mix in Lime. That scheduleseems to work for me.
As far as renting, I use to rent and it was a pain. Tillers were never
available unless you planned ahead, then if it rained you were out of luck.
In the Fall they were in disrepair and the smoke and sputtering would kill
you. Did that for a few years, that was enough.
Starting: My Troy has never failed to start, so far, and it is many years
old.
