Re[2]: Vine longevity

IT ALSO IS NICE TO KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE. THEN PEOPLE IN YOUR GENERAL
VICINITY CAN BETTER UNDERSTAND YOUR CLIMATE. I LIVE IN MINNESOTA SO I
HAVE TO BUILD A MINI GREEN HOUSE TO GET MY PLANTS IN EARLY ENOUGH.
IF YOUR IN CALIFORNIA OR TEXAS YOU WOULDN'T WANT TO HEAR WHAT I NEED
TO DO. SO WHERE ARE YOU?

Someone asked about "How long does a pumpkin live?" The answer is "not very
long" if you have big deer and groundhogs and cucumber beetles and fungus and
other things in abundance in your garden.

If you read the seed packet and some of the books about the life of a pumpkin
you get the idea that you will have somewhere between 120 and 150 days. Much
of this has to do with the weather. The plant responds to the weather since
its main job is to propogate itself and it does so by creating viable seeds
for next season. No seeds, end of line!!

In a short growing season where it doesn't stay warm long you would probably
be nearer to the 120 days. Where the season is warmer but not extremely hot
you might be near the 150 day range. Of course in some areas pumpkins won't
grow because it is either too hot (equator) or too cold (north pole).
Obviously you aren't growing at either extreme but the weather does have an
effect and you will have to deal with it.
GBPumpkin lives in a spot where he must start early because he gets an early
frost etc.

Hope this helps. Maybe one of the heavy hitters would like to add. Ordinarilly
I would have just lurked but we must make this group "a kinder gentler place."
