I was just reading an article that covers meeting the requirement for air
(oxygen) to get to the bottom of the compost pile. One recommendation was to
put brush or larger items at the bottom of the pile on the ground to let air
in underneath.

That is the way I build the piles for my Compost Feeding Method. Did it to
decompose the coarser material which I put on the bottom.
