The seed auctions are provided to generate funds for local pumpkin
growing groups. A lot of you are probably scratching your head ....
"Why are these people paying up to 50 USD for a pumpkin seed?"
When you get hooked into this sport, you look for every avenue to grow
that mammoth pumpkin. The seeds you are reading about are proven
seeds that can provide a large pumpkin if all the proper growing
conditions are provided.
The rule of thumb is:
If you know of a certain seed (family name with weight, ex. "Zehr
1061") produces a large pumpkins, then your chances are much greater to
grow a large pumpkin.
If the pumpkin is new (Anderson 977) then there is no statistical data
available to understand if the seeds are duds.
So....research the family tree of that seed and understand the pumpkin
weights which were achieved from that seed.
I hope this helps.....maybe someone can do better.
The two seeds I mentioned above are only examples of family names and
weights only.
