Re: Joel Hollands 97 Giant Pumpkin growing video-reply

Duncan:

Yes, I saw the video and I thought it was the best one yet, although he needs
a professional sound man to improve his audio track.

The seed germination process he presents works, I used it already this year.
The only problem I encountered was mold that appeared on the third day on the
outside of the peat pots. One has to remember that I am in FL, home of giant
bugs and fungus galore. Our relative humidity even in the winter months is
high. Laundry sitting in a clothes basket can mold and mildew overnight
sitting at ambient temps.

Perhaps my peat pots and soil were too moist. The video does not specify how
moist the soil should be, although it appeares by the video that the peat pots
were wet. I used a large, 168 quart while marine cooler chest (the kind that
takes two people to carry) and had two large trays full of peat pots stacked
two high. I used large inverted plastic cups like the ones you get from 7-11
for fountain drinks to separate the trays. This left plenty of air space
between.

Once I discovered the mold, I removed them from the cooler and gave them a
captan spray. Problem gone. We planted and our seedlings are fine.

As for the rest of the tape, I liked the ideas on building cloches and
temporary greenhouses. This would not be necessary here, but the content was
good for those in hardier climates. The pollination method was informative,
and so was the explanation of blowout and culling fruit to the best on the
vine.
