how to prevent leaves from wilting

Does anyone know if it is heat, lack of moisture, or intense sunlight that
causes pumpkin leaves to wilt?  All three factors could be at play of
course, but if it is intense sunlight then erecting a shade is the best
response, while if it is heat or lack of moisture then misting sounds best.

Anybody willing to run out to their patch at night with a hair dryer?  That
experiment might at least eliminate intense sunlight as the sole cause.
