Ask Hack-Me / How to prevent leafs from witing

Dan Shapiro & Group,

It was Dr. Hack-me (Pumpkinguy's) posting  early in 1996 regarding leaf wilt and cooling of plants by water evaporation that led me to devise a overhead micro emmitter system to cool my plants during the '97 growing season. Although someone in California had already devised such a system for pumpkins they were of no constructive assistance in helping me design my own system. Again Dr. Hack-me has adressed the subject eloquently. To sum up what he has stated  if your plants are wilting your burning stored carbohydrate in the fruit and you are not gaining weight, if anything you are losing weight or hopefully just maintaning weight.  Dr. Hack in my opinion has nailed it on the head. Water on your leafs and subsequent leaf burn is a dreary old wives tale as far as I am concerned. However, it may be a concern for disease in some areas. Southern Pumpkin growers or those in areas of high relative humidity may have problems with disease, we just don't know as no one has tried it. In my geographic region our relative humidity can range between 35% to 85% RHM due to the inland affect (heat) or marine influence (cool) but not higher RHM during summer months. No rot or moisture related disease problem last year. A preventative treatment of fungicide may help but again in areas of high humidity no one has tried this. Any takers?
