So,
It is time for me to begin my first "Serious" attempt at Giant Pumpkin
Growing. I live in Central Mass., and I am curious as to whether or not I
should be doing anything to get the season started now. Anyone?

Ernest,
Alot depends on your conditions. If you have heavy soil that is still wet,
I would wait another week or two, until things dry out. If you try to till wet
soil. you will make a mess with clumps clods etc. You can make some little
mini greenhouses out of 2 X 4,s and clear plastic. Get your watering setup
ready. Secure some old cow manure, leaves, compost , etc. Do a soil test to
see if any corrections are needed. Make a little warm box to sprout seeds in
....85 degrees is good. Put up a fence around the patch if animals are a
possibility. Figure out some wind protection for after the little greenhouses
are taken off. Get a small bag of sterilized lightweight seed starting mix (
not potting soil....too heavy) to start the seeds in. That will keep you busy
for a while.
