I was wondering if anyone in the group has ever tried Dried Blood
fertilizer 12-0-0 as a means of detering animals from entering your
patch? The first year I attempted growing AG's I used it faithfully
around the perimeter of the plants as they grew and didn't have a
problem with animals in the patch. I had four plants that year. Last
year I got a little careless in the late season due to the number of
plants I attempted to grow and ended up having a couple pumpkins chewed
on. I live in a rural area and have a lot of deer, groundhogs, moles
and the such. I spread it in a 6" band aroud the plats as they grow,
and increase the size as it gets larger (about every other week) thus
feeding the plant with some extra N as the vines are growing. Then once
the pumpkin is set I do the same around it. The only downfall is after
rain or heavy overhead watering it loses its effectiveness as a
deterrent and must be reapplied, (it is visible on the ground so you can
see if it has soaked into the soil) but is very effective if you use a
soaker type watering system and mist the leaves occasionally. I was
wondering if anyone has tried this method.
