Re: cold treatment

Pumpkinpiper
The purpose of cold treating is to get the seeds to germinate. This is
mothernatures way of preventing wild flowers from sprouting if the fall. The
cold weather sets the seed in motion to grow.
The cold treatment is common for wild flowers and trees. The pumpkin
family is more of a domestic seed that does not need a cold treatment. If
cold treated, the risk of seed damage due to damping off is much greater.
That is why sometimes pumpkin seeds will sprout inside the pumpkin if they
are left inside for a long time after the pumpkin is harvested.
