Charlie,
Those bugs with the wonderful aroma (when you squish them) are probably
Squash bugs...they are kind of grayish -black and tough to kill. Cucumber
beetles are the striped or spotted ones that are common in most areas. In my
area, I have found Sevin still works well on knocking out cucumber beetles.
Sevin doesn't work well on squash bugs (stink bugs). I use Asana on squash
bugs, but it is expensive and you may need a permit to buy it. A good, non-
chemical way to snare the little devils is to lay a 2 by 3 foot piece of
plywood a few feet away from your plant. The squash bugs think it's a
condominium and hide out under there. The next morning, you slink out into the
patch, armed with a small can of lighter fluid, kerosene, etc. Flip over the
plywood and start harvesting the overnight guests. Drop them into the
can......I do notice that they are swimming longer than they used to. Maybe
next year we will have kerosene resistant squash bugs. If all else fails, use
a 16 ounce framing hammer on them , on the sidewalk. Not a good idea to wear
your best sneakers that morning.
Good luck...pumkinguy
