fertilizer
I have used only a small amount of miracle grow because it is too
expensive. When the plant is young, a 15-30-15 is great to use, and the
added micro nutrients are a benefit. I like to add some Calcium Nitrate
early as well. This is for better roots, and sturdier plants from the
calcium. I never like fertilizing with nitrogen, but it comes along with
my readily available nitrate fertilizers. As the plant matures, begin
increasing the potassium until, just before fruit set it is equal with
phosphorous. After fruit set, I use only potassium nitrate, and calcium
nitrate for fruit development. This will depend on your soil. I have
plenty of phosphorous, so I do not need to continue using it. This allows
the plant plenty of nitrogen, and enough calcium and potassium for the
fruit. This is the general format of how I fertilize, however there are
other factors that often change this plan. I fertilize based on what I
think the plant needs. I also fertilize every day in dilute amounts to
keep even growth. Organic fertilizers often work very well, but what I
use is cheap, and effective in growing healthy plants and putting rapid
fruit growth. Hope this helps, glad to hear comments on this, and other
growers fertilization programs.
