Harold,
The color in Atlantic Giants seems to be an all or nothing affair. A cross
that contains some green genetic material, shows itself as an all green or all
orange offspring. I don't seem to get striped ones or blends. In 1986 I grew a
456 pounder that was crossed with a known orange parent. There must have been
some genetic color info hidden from a few years back. The resulting seeds
would produce pure orange fruit maybe 75% of the time and pure green fruit 25%
of the time. My percents are not exact, but was roughly what would happen if
you planted 10 seeds...2 or 3 would be green........ Note for newcomers: If
your baby pumpkin is yellow when it is the size of a baseball, it will end up
an orange one. If the baby is bright green, it will end up green. These things
are not like field pumpkins that start out green and turn orange later. If you
are bright green ,,, you are staying green. I have to qualify the orange
color....they come in many shades of salmon, orange, or very pale whiteish
orange. For competition purposes they are lumped into the "pumpkin class". The
green ones are classified as squash. Some sites have "pumpkin" and "squash"
prizes. Others can't be bothered classifying entries and just say....heaviest
wins . A common occurence on some pumpkins as they reach old age, they will
develop netting and a grayish color in between the netting. It is usually seen
on the shoulders or the lower sides of the specimen. This is normally
disregarded by the color judges if the predominant color is orange. The color
thing has been a pain at competitions for years.
