Re: Moles and walnuts

Black walnuts release a chemical into the soil,I beleive it is called
juglanone, that is toxic to many types of plants. I am not sure if English
walnuts do the same but since they are in the same family I would suspect
they do. If you look at black walnuts trees they are usually solitary trees
or at least not crowded by other trees with the exception of their own
kind. Many other trees are sensitive to this chemical. Not sure about C.
maxima though.

My experience with fall bulbs tells me moles burrow in packs! The
are very persistent little critters. For rodents they seem to be quite
intelligent. I always thought mothballs would repell them so I put them all
around my bulbs. But one day I found all the mothballs I put out packed in
a abandoned burrow about 30 feet from the bulbs. So much for that. I think
they would just burrow under the fence. The only method I have found
effective is the spiked mole trap. However it tends to only be partialy
effective and only gets the dumb ones. The smart members of the mole
community simply back burrow when they encounter the trap blocking off the
burrow so no other moles will not go that way.

oh yeah, I almost forgot the other, seldom mentioned, somewhat
controversial, and socially unacceptable method of repelling moles and
other small animal pests. It is very 'organic' and 'biological' in nature
and is probably practiced by many gardeners although they will never admit
it. If you don't know what I am talking about check out some old posts in
the archives about keeping moles, gophers, groundhogs out of your garden.
