I sent out our Spencerville Fair Suggested Growing Procedures to the group
and TOTO Land wanted to know if May 1 was too late for her. I replayed that
May 1 was OK. Now I think that one should get a map of North America and
Find Spencerville (Strait South of OTTAWA and 10miles North of the ST.
Lawrence River.) If You are South of Spencerville You could start earlier
- and maybe should- We use May 1 since that is when Barry DeJong started
the plant that became the Bax 990 He started it indoors and later set it
out. For us this time is a good blend of temperatures warming up and little
chance of frost. Frost may occur here up to early June. The plants in the
ground have then a good chance of growing well. Last year after I rotted
most of my seeds, I was late starting and didn't get anything in the ground
until mid to late May. The only Pumpkin seed that I got to germinate was
the Greer 1006. To flesh out the other 5 locations I had to rely on my good
friend Paul McIntyre who had some plants growing to give me 5 plants. So in
summary in TOTO land you may plant earlier and pay attention to the
germination process so you don't rot your seeds.
Bob.
