Play sand,  available at garden shops is sometimes used as a good, inexpensive
buffer between pumpkin bottom and the ground. After harvest, the sand can be
worked into the soil to condition it for next season.

Last year, I used sand in one garden and styrofoam boards in the other. Both
worked well. I plan on using styro boards this year, mainly because they are
less cumbersome, and I don't need any more sand in my garden here in FL.
