RE: Mites
Hi Beth,
There is a product on the market that serves as both a fungicide and
insecticide that is reputed to control spider mites. It is manufactured
under the name of Green Light. They have it at many garden centers and
hardware and feed stores. There is one called Rose Defense, Fruit and Nut
Tree Spray, and Flower and Vegetable Spray. I have looked at all of these
and they are essentially the same. The product is a 10% concentration of
Neem seed oil. The Neem tree is from southeast Asia and the oil is pressed
from the seeds. I have used it as a fruit tree spray and on my roses. It
doesn't seem to control blackspot well, but seems more effective on powdery
mildew. It also does well controlling aphids and mites in my experience.
I understand it works by causing the stomach of the little sucking insects
to explode. It seems to me to be a little more environmentally friendly
than some other spray solutions. It's a bit pricey, but not outrageous. A
pint runs anywhere from 12 to 15 dollars and it mixes up at a rate of two
tablespoons per gallon. It is approved for use on cucurbits too, although
they don't specify pumpkins. I hope this helps.
