shading the fruit prt2

I got an email the said that many large pumpkins are/can be grown w/o the
use of shading. If the skin is kept moist and cool, is this true?

Only reason I'm pondering this is because I just told my fiancée that we may
have to have a big tarp contraption in the backyard because of the pumpkin
and she wasn't too happy with it. She's still letting me do it, but I have a
feeling it's gonna cost me in the future. :)

Also, how early to you shade and when do you stop?

Thanks for all the advice you guys are giving, it's helping A LOT. I thought
I had an idea of what I was in for when I decided to try this, but I just
had a couple of leaves in the pumpkin patch when I needed to have all the
leaves in the patch!!!
