Every one has there own preferences,some use sand,styrofoam,insulation 
board,plywood or noththing at all, my preference is a fabric that is a 
byproduct from a papermill,it isa very poreous mat.,more like a very smooth 
and tight knit screen,used as belt in the mill to carry the wet wood pulp 
across big vacums that suck the moisture out.when placed under your punkin w/ 
smooth side up this allows the fruit glide right along and all water is 
allowed to drain down thru,thus keeping fruit pretty dry.So if you know 
someone that works for a mill I'm sure for a couple bucks you can get some 
too. I've used it for acouple of years ,It works for me!   GOOD LUCK TO ALL
