RE: Salty Soil


Fresh cow manure has a high level of salts from the feed given to cattle.
Usually this salt level is reduced by allowing rainwater to leach out the
salts.  If the manure has not been aged in the out-of-doors, then it could
contain levels of salt that are higher than desirable.

Has anyone ever heard of, or had problems with excessive levels of salt in
commercially bagged steer manure?  I was told by a nursery man this weekend
to watch the amount of manure I use as an amendment because of the
cumulative effect of salt buildup?  I've never heard of this being a problem
and wonder if it's just someone's urban gardening legend.
