Re: Another Newbie but not too serious of a grower

You should easily grow a 50lb pumpkin. Here are some pointers to remember.

-Stats have shown, that most of the larger pumpkins are at least 10 feet from the main root.
-Be sure to hand pollinate your pumpkin in the morning.... understand what a female and a male flower looks like and keep your eyes on the males and females that are about to open on the same day so you have fresh pollen.
-Be sure to bury your vines with soil at each leaf node.
-If your area gets to hot, be sure to water/mist daily
-Try not to walk on the soil near your pumpkin plant. Use boards to support your weight.
-Understand the different types of fertilize ratios to use during plant growth and after pollination.
-Be sure to shade your pumpkins during its growth.

Dont be surprised if you see a pumpkin explode due to rapid growth.
Dont be surprised if you see a pumpkin shrivel and fall off. This happens because of poor pollination.

Keep you eye on your vine, it may go into your neighbors yard.

The Next Door Neighbor
I was at the weigh-off
Admiring the fruits of my labor
When I bumped into Sam
My next door neighbour
Now he doesn t grow pumpkins
I know this for sure
Because the ground in his yard
Is extremely poor
He said he was there
To win a big prize
And he had a pumpkin
Of enormous size
And he wasn't joking
He stole the show
He won a beautiful trophy
And a pile of dough
I just couldn't believe it
How did you grow it I said
I found it last week
Behind my shed
Your pumpkin plant
All green and dense
Grew into my yard
Through my back fence
It was in my yard
So its legally mine
And you can come over tomorrow
And remove your vine
