Re: watering fertal. soil
Unless you have heavy, poorly draining soil, I'd give it
a good watering with preferably warm water. Many
fertilizers, especially organic ones, cannot be used
directly by plants. Micro organisms eat the fert and
convert it to a usable form for the plant. These organisms
are mainly aerobic, ie, they want an environment with air,
but they also need water too. So you have to add enough
water to let them thrive, without watering so much that you
fill all the air space of the soil and soffocate the
airobic organisms. They also like it warm, and cold water
will cool the soil, so try to use warm water.
Untill the organic addatives are broken down by the micro
organisms they're not only unavailable to your pumpkin, but
the organisms will tie up nitrogen by using it to eat the
organic material. They are better at utilising the nitro,
so the plant can't compete with them, they do release the
nitro back to the plant when the organics are all consumed
and the population dies off, but this does take time.
Some chemical fertilizers can be immediatly used by the
plants though, most of the water solubles such as miracle
grow can be used immediately. If you have uncomposted
organics in your bed, the water solubles can tide you over
untill the micro organisms finally release the nitrogen
they've been using. The "bugs" don't seem to tie up the
phosphorus and potassium the same way they do the nitro, so
there's less worry with those nutrients.
