This was the older, traditional recommendation, though many heavy hitters 
are coming to realize that much can be accomplished in smaller spaces.  Gary 
Burke's 1092 world champ a couple of years ago was grown on less than 500 
square feet - I have the figure 460 square feet in mind, though that might 
not be the exact number.

In fact, aggressive pruning will direct all the plant's energy into the 
fruit.  600 sf per plant should be ample to grow any size of pumpkin you 
want IF the plant is well-managed.  That's a big "if", of course.  That 
means you have to have your soil in great shape, manage the vine well, and 
also get lucky in the weather department.

I think 5 plants in 3000 sf sounds fine, though you will probably want to 
choose the best two or three plants to focus on, once you see which ones 
show the most promise.  Time and energy will be larger issues than square 
footage.
