SE Minnesota Update
My SE Minnesota Update is somewhat later in the pumpkin season than
fellow pumpkin grower Dave Bhaskaran. Dave likes to plant his pumpkins
before the snow melts by using heating cables and special protective
covering to keep his pumpkins from freezing. :)
I started the germination process the evening of April 30, and most of
the pumpkins have been planted for about a week. This past week was
great growing weather as the pumpkins grew much more than usual during
this time of May. This week has turned cool and wet again as the
Rochester area received close to two inches of rain last evening. Before
this last rain, the normal rainfall for the month of May had already
been exceeded. This will be a week of slow growth.
For the past several years, I have planted twelve plants and have had so
little time to do much else in the summer. So, this year, I am planting
only six AG pumpkins and they are:
1) 693 Heyne 98 -- 858 Baird 97 x 520 Heyne 97 -- 39 hours to germinate
2) 1026 Holland 00 -- 903 UOW Holland 97 x 935 Lloyd 97 -- 39 hours
3) 826.5 Hester 00 -- 935 Lloyd 97 x 946 Geerts 96 -- 49 hours
4) 650 Heyne 00 -- 690 Bernard 99 x 511.5 Heyne 99 -- 52 hours
5) 615 Hester 00 -- 968 Sproule 98 x 1010 MacKenzie 98 -- 48 hours
6) 607 Geary 00 -- 968 Sproule 98 x 734 Marcellus 98 -- 29 hours
My best to you all this pumpkin growing season.
