My poor memory corrected
Bob Troy and Growers All!
I was wrong about the date of Dorothy's news clipping. It's much later
than I remembered, and it's still fascinating. Bob, I'll get you a
photocopy sometime soon.
The picture shows Arthur Quint 'with last year's 526-pound winner.' The
story appears in the October 1987 Image magazine. Quint of Castro Valley
won at Half Moon Bay two years in a row, 1985 and 1986. Quint says that
he developed his own punkin strain by crossbreeding. 'What you put in
you get out,' he told the reporter: feed them properly, water daily, cut
off the little suckers every day.
Reporter: 'Little suckers?'
Reporter: Do you ever talk to your pumpkins?
Quint told the reporter that he sold his seeds for 50 cents to a dollar
apiece, then he cuts up the punkin and gives each of his friends a big
chunk for pies.
Quint's first pumpkin, in 1981, was 251 pounds 'though it was a squash,
not a pumpkin. Won the US championship with it.' In 1982 he won a trip
to Hawaii. In 1986 he was featured on the Joan Rivers show. 'She's a
lovely lady.'
