Leaves on plants in ground turning light brown

Two of my plants leaves turned a light tan color and died.  They appear to have dried out.  Did I not harden them properly of did I do something else.  My prep work was fairly extensive as far as the mound is concerned.  I have yet to really fertilize and now I a little perplexed about what is happening.
