Hi All ! From Dave at Hanover, Ontario, Can. Cold here too but
no frost last night. Here is an easy way to make yourself a cold frame for the
first weeks of your plants life in these trying times. Get yourself a BANANA BOX
with the plastic liner with air holes as well. Open the bottom flaps and place
over site. Put dirt on the flaps to hold the box in place. Take lid off and
transplant pumpkin seedling inside. Cover bottom with the plastic liner and put
lid on to hold in place. The top flaps can be opened later to let more light in.
This system keeps the frost out at night and can be snuggled with a blanket if
need be. I have been doing the Joel Holland thing with his incubator by
germinating my seeds in an insulated cooler with a jug of hot tap water inside
as the source of heat and I am pleased with the results. I now am putting a jug
of hot water in my banana boxes at night to help keep the temperature even. I
set out three of my sixteen plants on Wednesday and they are doing quite well.
This will do until a larger protection may be required and at least the plants
are settled and on the way. Good Luck. Dave McCallum
