RE: Peat Pots

All I saw there in peat were 3", plus I had to allow cookies for the
text to show up.

As far as I know, I think peat pots only go up to 4 or 4.5" and they are
round, and there may be a deep version like 4.5 or 5" deep. Many people
may be confusing peat pots with compressed pots which are available in
large sizes. I don't know what the exact material is but it's not peat,
and they are much thicker, like 1/4-3/8" or more depending on size, and
I don't believe they were made to decompose. I think they are just made
from recycled wood/paper materials instead of plastic. I even have some
that are like inserts for 1020 trays, and they have large drain holes.

For about $0.75, I can get 4 gallon square buckets with lids. I use them
to grow peppers & tomatoes. Due to the reinforced upper 3" you can stack
them inside each other with the lids off; you can split one down the
sides to make it able to take apart when it's time to plant, or make the
bottom removable. Because of the slight taper to the sides, you can cut
the bottom off about 3" up, slit 1 side, drill holes in the bottom for
drainage, insert the bottom and the slit remaining top half (actually
about 9-10" tall) into another bucket, (this will give you a gap about
2-3" for drainage) fill with mix & plant your seeds. When there's enough
growth to plant, lift the split top 1/2 out of the other bucket with
your rootball and the bottom piece should remain in the 2nd bucket &
your rootball bottom should be exposed. Take to the planting hole,
insert into the final spot, spread the split side apart and remove the
bucket.

You can also do it this way: with the lid snapped on, turn the bucket
upside-down, cut the bottom off, put the mix in & seed(s), grow til
ready to plant, take to the final location, take the lid (bottom) off,
set in hole, lift the bucket off; because the bucket is narrower at the
top, it will slide off easily. If doing it this way, I'd drill some
holes just above the lid/bottom for drainage.

These buckets can often be gotten for free from restaurants & pizzerias.
The ones I get are from salted eggs but are often used for bulk
mayonnaise, pickles, etc. I buy mine from a hardware store, already
cleaned. They are about 9x9x13"D. For some pics, see:

Hope this helps.
