Alan,

Salts contained in the soluble fertilizers remains around the roots when
there is'nt enough water applied. Affected young plants fade more rapidly
and yellow spot appear at the fringe of the leafs. Cucurbyte are very
sensitive to salts in excess. To leach out these salts, you must flood the
roots by applying enough clear water until water drain off the bottom of the
pot.
