Re: Polymer Crystals

  Matt
those Polymer crystals are pretty good on Annual plants keep the soil open
with lots of air but at the same time just damp enough !! my Arboriculture
books say NEVER use them for trees for this reason !! the polymer crystals absorb
the fertilizers if that fertilizer contains IRON then the iron is absorbed and
chemically brakes down the crystals and then it does not retain moisture any
more what it then does is fill the air particles in the area and holds them
together so it kinda makes little Clay type rocks. another problem is it can
hold the fertilizer salts and since it won't leach that area becomes "salt
toxic." this may take a few years but if you are going to use a patch for a few
years you may consider only using it in the mound then replacing all the soil
every year.
I used them the first year and they were fine but after reading my Advanced
Arboriculture books I have stayed away !!! Give it a try and let us know how
it works !! Hope I helped a little !!! Take care and good luck !!!!
