Be careful using cocoa bean shells. You are right they do hold moisture but 
if applied too thick they also produce heat when wet. The heat can be 
disastrous to plant roots. We used cocoa bean shells a couple of years ago because I. 
they were readily available (had 2 million pounds to get rid of) 2. they were 
free. 3. easy to apply. 4. smelled great 5. looked great 6. kept down the 
weeds.
